Title : India Orientalis quae dicitue et Insulae Adiacentes.
Map maker : BLAEU, W..
Date : Amsterdam, 1634.
Size : 16.1 x 19.8 inches. / 41.0 x 50.2 cm.
Colouring : In original o/l colours.

Description :A scarce proof state of Willem Blaeu's map of the South Asia. This map is a first edition, first issue from his German edition Novus Atlas of 1634.
Map extent is from modern day Afghanistan in the west to southern Japan in the east. In the upper right corner the southern tip of Korea is shown, and marked "Corea insula".

It was the first popular map to depict part of Australia (together with New Guinea) i.e. at bottom right the west coast of Carpentaria and the NW top of Australia with the following names: 't Hoge Landt, Rivier van Speult, Rivier Batavia, Water plaets, Rivier Coen, Vereenighde Rivier, Rivier Nassau, Staten Rivier, Wits landt, Willems Rivier, 't Landt van D'Eendracht and Trail.
New Guinea is incorrectly shown as being part of the Australian mainland.

Among the very few printed regional maps to show an Australian coastline prior to Tasman's discoveries.

Large blank spaces are seen where in later edition it is filled with a wonderful dedication cartouche and assorted other decorative embellishments.
The "India Quae Orientalis" map of South East Asia has only the basic geography and nomenclature. The plate was printed before the title had been finished (only the "India" part of the title had been engraved) and before the decorative cartouches, ships, cherubs and major country and ocean names had been included.
According S.Dewez : "In this first incomplete state the map is of utmost importance, as it was the first regional map in an atlas to show the Dutch discoveries of Australia and the first to chart those discoveries on both the west coast of Australia and Cape York Peninsula.

Although the Van Langren World map dated ca 1626 pre-dates Blaeu's map and also indicates Dutch knowledge of Australia on both coats, it fails to actually chart the west coast discoveries.
Blaeu's map lists the discoveries made by Carstensz in 1623 on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. It fails however to show the discoveries further to the west made by Colster in the Arnhem. Van Colster separated from Castensz. on the homeward journey, instead sailing further to the west charting parts of Arnhem Land. Blaeu has also inserted a small section of the West Australian coast mentioning the discoveries made by the Dutchman Hartog in 1616 ('T Landt van Eendracht"), a chance landing in 1618 by Leneart Jacobszoon in the Mauritius ("Willems Revier") and the 1628 discoveries by de Witt ("G.F.deWits Landt")."

From an incomplete example of the 1634 German text edition of Blaeu's "Novus Atlas", previously owned by Johann Christoph Gesen (1639), Johann Rudolph von Metzradt (1651), Friedrich August II, King of Saxony (1797-1854).
P. van der Krogt mentions two variants for the German 1634 text edition and only two examples containing proof states (Bad Münstereifel and Gotha).
