Title : Tabula Magnae Britanniae continens Angliam Scotiam et Hiberniam..
Map maker : VISSCHER, C.J..
Date : Amsterdam, 1625.
Size : 18.1 x 21.5 inches. / 46.1 x 54.7 cm.
Colouring : Original colours

Description :A very rare and decorative carte-ą-figures map in a first state. Prof. Schilder locates only 8 other copies !.
Interestingly the map has extensive contemporary annotations throughout in bown ink with red underlining.
The map appeared at the same time as Jodocus Hondius's single-sheet map with decorative borders. In their design, content and decoration there is so much similarity that it cannot be stated with any certainty which one served as a model for the other. In any case the map was published before the death of James I in 1625.
The map was engraved by Abraham Goos, the decorative borders were etched in Visscher's workshop.

Unfortunataly with the in the condition report described problems, but never the less a very attractive map with a great appeal. ¤
Following is a detailed description of the restorations:
At the center of the map (and around the Isle of Man), there's almost no replacement. The centerfold has been reinforced with old paper at some places (see scan). There was maybe just some mm loss right from the Isle of Man (which has been reinforced at back). Very small hole right from Ireland (just above "Raydon cast"). These imperfections are hardly noticable.
Reinforced with old paper at the 4 sides + 2 lower corners.
TOP: The black line has been partly redrawn. Also some mm between the view of London and the coat of arms. Left corner: some mm redrawn.
LEFT: Ok (see also lower corners)
RIGHT: Small hole right from the portret on top. The black line a bit redrawn on top and bottom. (see also lower corners)
BOTTOM: Black line partly redrawn. At several places some mm of loss (reinforced), under the town views. (see also lower corners)
LOWER CORNERS: Here there are the biggest problems. The corners have been rebacked with facsimile on old paper. Facsimile left:
ca. 2,5 cm towards the top and ca. 6,5 cm towards the right of the border. "Insigne" small part of the coat of arms.
Facsimile right:
ca. 1,5 cm towards the top and ca. 7,5 cm towards the left of the border. "(I)nsigne Hiberni" ca. 1/4 of the circle of the coat of arms. Please have a very good look at the high resolution scans of the 2 lower corners.

Schilder, Monumenta VI, Map 87 first state.
Condition : Margins extended with some reinstatement of black line on top. More significant reinstatement of lower corners. Some reinforcement in center. Colours a bit retouched.
