'Greenland' with eleven views. Whaling, bear and walrus killing. The island split in two and Wiches Lande at edge, complete with compass-rose, galleon and monsters. Surrounded by eleven scenes of whaling from capture to boiling the blubber and scraping baleen.
From "Churchill's Voyages", a rare item. Spitsbergen named Greenland .

By the 17th century English whaling expeditions were active off Spitzbergen (called Greenland in this map because it was thought to be part of Greenland). Shore stations were established to process the blubber, but conditions were extremely harsh. To save time, an attempt was made to persuade English convicts to work at these stations throughout the year, in exchange for a pardon. When they saw how awful conditions were the convicts demanded to be returned to prison in England.
