A beautiful miniature map by Bertius shows the Canary islands with Palma, Gomera, Ferro, Tenerifa, Gran Canaria, Forte Ventura and Lanzerote. Decorative, ornamental title cartouche. North is orientated to the left. The archipelago also includes a number of islands and islets: La Graciosa, Alegranza, Isla de Lobos, Montaoa Clara, Roque del Oeste and Roque del Este.
In ancient times, the island chain was often referred to as the' Fortunate Isles', The Canary Islands are the most southerly region of Spain, and the largest and most populated archipelago of the Macaronesia region. Inset of Palma de Canarias.
Bertius (1565-1629) was a Flemish cartographer, theologian, historian and geographer. Although he published much in the fields of mathematics, theology and history, he is perhaps best known as a cartographer. This example is from his Tabularum Geographicarum Contractarum, and was heavily influenced by the earlier works of Mercator, from the late sixteenth century. He was connected, by marriage to Jacobus Hondius and Pieter van den Keere - both excellent cartographers, who would influence his later life.
Bertius was 'Cosmographer' to the court of King Louis XIII.
