It ends in the coup d'état of Manuel Pavía, which begins a new period of trouble before the Bourbon restoration. The period 1868-1874 is known as Sexenio Democrático (the "six democratic years"). The royal cause is represented in Parliament by Antonio Cánovas del Castillo.

At its peak circulation reached 50,000, and in 1878 a Parisian version, 'Le Perroquet', and London edition, 'The Parrot', were launched. 'Il Papagallo' closed in 1915, when Grossi was 70 years old.
