The lithography shows six characters who tear a map of Spain and its different provinces, these represent the different forces in the presence: Alfonso II, Carlists, Moderates, Montpensier and a convict named Petroni.
In the background, a fleet of boats with human faces and each representing a nation (Americans, Prussians, Italians, English and French), observe the scene.

In Spain, various governments succeed one another, a provisional government" (1868-1870), the democratic monarchy of Amédée I (1871-1873) and the First Spanish Republic (1873-1874). It ends in the coup d'état of Manuel Pavía, which begins a new period of trouble before the Bourbon restoration. The period 1868-1874 is known as Sexenio Democrático (the "six democratic years"). The royal cause is represented in Parliament by Antonio Cánovas del Castillo.

Taken from the Italian satirical newspaper "Il Papagallo", a satirical magazine founded in January 1873 by Augusto Grossi (1835-1919), which specialized in colour-printed caricatures like this one. At its peak circulation reached 50,000, and in 1878 a Parisian version, 'Le Perroquet', and London edition, 'The Parrot', were launched. 'Il Papagallo' closed in 1915, when Grossi was 70 years old.
