Condition Rating

Nice example of this scarce large format map of Asia by Senex. The map is most remarkable for its detail in South east Asia, the Philippines, Larrones Isles, New Guinea and in its early illustration of the North Coastline of Australia.

The map is of interest for the use of THE EASTERN OR COREA SEA, for the sea between Korea and Japan.

Large decorative dedication cartouche and two other cartouches. Also shows Land of Compagnia and Land of Yedso in tentative fashion, north of Japan, none of which have complete coastlines.

John Senex's A New General Atlas of the World was, strangely the only early 18th century English attempt at emulating the success of the French and Dutch mapmakers' folio atlases. Other London mapmakers concentrated on very large, or very small format atlases, separate issues or chart books: whereas Senex produced his maps in folio format. ¤
