Half-length portrait of Anacamegishca, bare-chested, wearing a blanket and a peace medal.
A-Na-Cam-E-Gish-Ca (1785-1862) - was a Chippeway Indian Chief. The Chippewa is one of the largest Native American Tribes in the USA, made up of some 150 bands of Indians.
They roughly inhabited the northern US states of MI / MN / WI / ND, and parts of Ontario, Canada. Theirs is an enlightened culture that allows men and women to be elected as chiefs.
The Chippewa are also known as Ojibew, or Ojibway tribes.
Taken from the work entitled "History of the Indian Tribes of North America, with Biographical Sketches and Anecdotes of the Principal Chiefs", published for Thomas McKenney & James Hall in Philadelphia between 1837-44.
