Condition Rating

This evocative and deeply spiritual engraving by Bodmer shows a cairn (human made stack, or pile of stones, rocks) topped with the skull of a buffalo, made by the Assiniboin, a nomadic plaines Indian tribe.
Bodmer made the sketch in the summer of 1833, near Fort Union, at the junction of the Missouri and the Yellowstone Rivers.
The buffalo was truly essential and immensely important to the Assiniboin. Other animals were hunted, but only the buffalo provided the majority of their food and the hide and bone with which to fashion shelter, clothing and tools.

Titles in German, French and English, as the work was published in all of these countries.

Karl Bodmer's images show wonderful versatility and technical merit, that combine to give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. From 'Travels in the Interior of North America'.
