Condition Rating

Rare map of the America's published in Pierre D'Avity's Les Etats... With figured borders on three sides and drawn from the Picart map of 1644, itself derived from the second state of the Janssonius, 1623. The most noticeable difference is the removal of the two skulls below the title cartouche.
Philip Burden refers to only one copy and could not identify more examples.

The North Pole illustrate Frobisher's theory of the NORTHWEST PASSAGE and the South Pole shows the long-held idea of the legendary southern continent.
The map is richly decorated with a strapwork title cartouche, fleets of ships and sea monsters. North America retains the peninsular California and the East Coast is beginning to take shape, although it still lacks detail in the mid-Atlantic region.
In South America, there is a large inland sea and two engraved scenes, one of which details a cannibalistic feast. No text on verso. Cartouche signed : Auct: Judoco Hondio.
Reference: Burden, America, 333.
