FIRST STATE without the coats of arms and it final title "Fossa Sanctae Mariae." - Only included in a few early editions.

Detailed map of part of the country between rivers Rhine and Meuse showing a canal to be dug between 1626 and 1628 between Rheinberg in Germany and Venlo. A deficiency of financial means combined with the seizure of 's-Hertogenbosch (1629) and Venlo (1632) by the Spanish army delivered the death-blow to the project. Solely the stretch between Rheinberg and Geldern was completed.
Map is complimented by a pair of fine cartouches in the lower corners.
From early on Willem Jansz. Blaeu aimed of publishing an atlas to compete with the Hondius-Jansson Atlas. By 1630, he had published at least 17 folio size maps. Blaeu was able to realize his plan soon after he had acquired the copper plates of the atlas maps by Jodocus Hondius. The "Appendix followed in 1630.
In 1635 he finally realized a "international edition" of a world atlas, the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum".

From an incomplete example of the 1634 German text edition of Blaeu's "Novus Atlas", previously owned by Johann Christoph Gesen (1639), Johann Rudolph von Metzradt (1651), Friedrich August II, King of Saxony (1797-1854).
P. van der Krogt mentions two variants for the German 1634 text edition and only two examples containing proof states (Bad Münstereifel and Gotha).
