Extremely rare and large sea chart of the Southeastern seaboard with Virginia, Florida, the gulf of Mexico and the West Indies by Johannes Loots. The chart has a highly decorative character, it has a decorative allegoric title cartouche, two extensive cartouches with the dedication to Nicolaes Witsen and further an inset map of the Bermudas.

The chart is dedicated in the upper right corner to the mayor of Amsterdam Nicolaas Witsen. Above the dedication a beautiful fully hand coloured coat of arms of Nicolaas Witsen.
The dedication reads as follows :"Aan den wel Edelen Groot-agtbaren Heer d 'Heer Mr. Nicolaas Witsen oud Burgermeester, en Raad der Stad Amsterdam Mitsgaders Bewinthebber der Nederlandsche Geoctroijeerde Oost-Indische Compagnie ter kamer Amsterdam en Commissaris der Pilotagie etc. etc. etc. Wert desen Nieuwe Groote en Seer Curiense Paskaerd van West-Indien Eerbiedich, en Onderdaniglyk opgedragen door Syn Wel Edele Groot-Agtbare Onderdanigen, en Gehoorsamen Dienaar Ioannes Loots."

Nicolaes Witsen (8 May 1641 – 10 August 1717) was a Dutch statesman who was mayor of Amsterdam thirteen times, between 1682-1706. In 1693 he became administrator of the VOC. In 1689 he was extraordinary-ambassador to the English court, and became Fellow of the Royal Society.
In his free time he was cartographer, maritime writer, and an authority on shipbuilding. His books on the subject are important sources on Dutch shipbuilding in the 17th century. Furthermore, he was an expert on Russian affairs. He was the first to describe Siberia, Far East and Central Asia in his study on North and East Tartary.

The chart is amazing in its details and it strikes with its beauty. With three interesting engraved mythological scenes: one of an animal (named Allacran north of Yucatan), a wind ghost (named Caranilla northwest of Nicaragua) and another sea monster or sea snake (named Bibera south of Jamaica).

The map has a fine inset of Bermuda 128x175mm (5x7inch) large.
Further the map provides very good information on place names along the northern coast of Cuba, not found on any other period charts. The peninsula of Florida including the bay of Tampa. Also many place names are given along the coast of the gulf of Mexico, nowadays the coastline of Texas.

Charts by Johannes Loots (1665-1726) are rare. Loots was a maker of mathematical and nautical instruments. During 1698-1707, various quantities of maps have been sold as atlases but a complete work never appeared. He lived in Amsterdam on the Zeedijk and his profession was a nautical instruments maker. About 1693 he moved his shop in the Nieuwebrugsteeg 'In de Longe Lootsman', the fifth house from the New Bridge on the right side. Two colleague-ship-chandlers lived on the same street: Johannes van Keulen 'In de gekroonde Lootsman' and Hendrick Doncker in the third house from the New Bridge 'In 't Stuurmans Gereedschap'.
On May, 5 1693 he became a member of the guild of booksellers. On April, 1st 1695 we do find the first record of activities as a chart publisher.

Only two other examples are known. OCLC lists the example in the Sächsische Landesbibliothek in Dresden. OCLC 315400219.
The P.A. Leupe Collection in the Dutch National Archives holds a chart book with twelve charts by Loots.
The two know examples are in black and white. This example being in very delicate original colours was definataly a show piece or presentation copy. Our example has two vertical foldings but no binders strip on the verso. It is contemporarily laid on gray paper to support the separate sheet.
