German interest in North America was high during the first half of the eighteenth century when Johann Baptiste Homann was the leading German cartographer. During this period his cartographic image of New England, based on a combination of earlier sources, was intended both to delight and instruct the would-be immigrant who might consult this map before making the journey across the Atlantic.
A most interesting feature is a strait cutting through Cape Cod in the area of Eastham, which historical records indicate existed at the time. Norumbega (Norumbeag here) has been reduced to designating a fairly limited region. New Jersey is divided into East and West Jersey and so named.
Particularly desired for its size and decoration, the map is also notable for its inaccuracies. Note the over-large Lake Champlain and other non-existent lakes in New York Province.
