Title : De opere sexte diei. Foliu V. [a Christian-Aristotelian view of the cosmos].
Map maker : SCHEDEL, H..
Date : Nuremberg, 12 July 1493.
Size : 16.5 x 11.8 inches. / 42.0 x 30.0 cm.
Colouring : Coloured.

Description :A very fine representation of Adam's creation (Dim. H : 225 mm W : 222 mm). According to the Bible God created all of the land animals on the sixth day of creation.
On verso a 275X222 mm woodblock entitled De sanctificatione septime diei: "God blessed the seventh day, and He declared it to be holy"
This woodcut shows God resting after creating the world in six days.
This is a Christian-Aristotelian view of the cosmos: at the center is the earth surrounded by other three elements of water, air and fire. Beyond it are the seven planetary spheres (the Moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn), then the firmament (the dome of fixed stars), the crystalline heaven and Aristotle's primum mobile, the revolving outermost sphere which moves the universe by imparting motion to the other spheres. The four winds grace the corners. The woodcut, then, combines ancient philosophy, a Christian perspective and weather. (Dr. Susannah Helman in Mapping our World.)

Page from the richest illustrated Incunable, the famous: Liber chronicarum or Nuremberg Chronicle, published the year that Columbus returned to Europe after discovering America.
The woodblock cutters were Michael Wolgemut, the well-known teacher of Albrecht Dürer, and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. Wohlgemut was Albrecht Dürer's tutor between 1486-90 and recent scholarship has shown, Albrecht Dürer may also have collaborated, since some of the cuts bear a remarkably close resemblance to the Apocalypse illustrations.
The printing was carried out under the supervision of the great scholar-printer Anton Koberger, whose printing were famous throughout Europe.

A opportunity to acquire a 15th-century book illustration by named artists.!

Condition : Marginal spotting. Upper and lower margins weakened. Else good condition.
