Title : Carte d' Amerique Dressee pour l'Usage Du Roy...
Map maker : COVENS, J. / MORTIER, C..
Date : Amsterdam c. 1745.
Size : 19.6 x 23.7 inches. / 49.8 x 60.2 cm.
Colouring : Original o/l colour.

Description :Detailed copper-engraved map of the American continent. Decorative title cartouche with foliate garland, and embellished lettering of d' Amerique. The western parts of Africa and Europe are shown at the left.
Covens & Mortier's fine reissue of De l'Isle's 1722 map of North and South America, basically unchanged though re-engraved.
The caption in top border reads America accurate in Imperia, Regna Status & Populos Divisa ?For California, the west coast is taken north to Cap Mendocin and Cap Blanc, with the notation, Entrée decouverte par Martin d'Aguilar. Wagner notes "Briggs names with some of the corrections made by Blaeu. The Mediterranean Sea of California has disappeared. Delisle retained Cabrillo's B. de Pinos and introduced a few, the I. Ste Anne, the B. de St. Martin, and the B. de la Medelaine, from other maps. It seems likely that he had read the account of the Vizcaino expedition Torquemada... On the Sonora coast the names are much the same as those on his 1700 map with a few additions from Kino's map and other sources in Sonora..." Tooley describes this issue of the De l'Isle map as "Re-engraved though the map remains basically unchanged. The lettering within the title cartouche is copied from the issue of the first edition with the florid lettering for d'Amerique."
The map shows tremendous detail throughout. Most notable is the representation of the Mississippi, pushed west of its actual course and showing a number of long east reaching sources. Dozens of Indian Names abound. The coastline of California has no fewer than 18 place names, including the Channel islands, San Francisco and several mythical rivers, including the Carmel River. Excellent detail in the SW US, and throughout South America, with is treated in excellent detail.
Cartouche, compass rose and extensive notes throughout the map.
Condition : Original outline hand colouring on heavy paper, slightly age-toned as usual. Short margins as issued. Minor split lower part center fold just attaining the plate mark.
Good impression. Very good condition.
