Date : Frankfurt, M.Merian, 1633.
Size : 5.9 x 8.1 inches. / 15.0 x 20.5 cm.

Description :This was a charming and beautiful island, full of coconuts, upas-root and wild pigs, which the natives either offered or sold to the Dutch. The natives seemed very wild and rough at first but were soon mollified by the friendliness of the Dutch. The houses all along the shore were round with pointed tips.
The roofs allowed rainwater to drain away easily. In each home there was a bit of dried vegetation, two fishing poles and a wooden club, which seemed to be the only household items. The natives are good swimmers, dreadful thieves and very greedy for metal artefacts. After staying there for some time, the Dutch sailed on to the Moluccan Islands

In 1631 Johann Ludwig Gottfried, inherited the Theodor De Bry’s publishing firm, among the illustrated accounts of the expeditions of Magellan, Columbus, Vespucci, Cortes, Balboa, Raleigh, Drake, Smith, and many others.
Gottfried issued together with Matthaeus Merian a one-volume condensation "Newe Welt Vnd Americanische Historien/ Jnhaltende Warhafftige vnd volkommene Beschreibungen Aller West-Jndianischen Landschafften..." that used many of the original copper plates and supplemented them with new ones of more recent voyages. The book was published by Matthaeus Merian. The work was reprinted in 1655 / 1657.
