Title : The Coast of New Found Land From Salmon Cove to Cape Bonavista. . . [together with] The Coast of New Found Land from Cape-Raze to Cape St-Francis..

Date : Dublin, 1767.
Size : 16.3 x 39.0 inches. / 41.5 x 99.0 cm.

Description :Two charts showing the coast of New Found Land from Salmon Cove to Cape Bonavista and from Cape-Raze to Cape St-Francis. With inset chart of Trinity Harbor

Grierson published only one edition of the pirated "The Fourth book of the English Pilot" in 1749. This is the second issue of the chart by Boulter Grierson published in 1767 and has no watermark, an edition almost as rare as the first. The charts are from the same plates without change, even to the imprints.
After his death in 1753 his eldest son, George Abraham Grierson, continued the business, but for only two years.
Upon the death of this son in 1755, his executors carried on until 1758, at which time a second son, Boulter, acquired possession.
Boulter Gierson was the son of George's second wife, a sister to the noted printer James Blow of Belfast.

Mark Tiddeman (fl. c. 1724 - c. 1760) was a British navigator, surveyor, chart maker, and hydrographer active in the early 18th century. Tiddeman was sailing master of the English sailing ship Tartar. From 1724 to 1728 he completed a hydrographic survey of New York Harbor and the mouth of the Chesapeake. These surveys were eventually adopted by Mount and Page for inclusion in the 1732 fourth book of the English Pilot. On returning to England Tiddeman completed several surveys of the Highlands of Scotland for Admiral Wagner, who was then stationed on the Coast of Scotland. On March 27th of 1741 he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy. He later became a Captain and piloted several ships to and from the British West Indies.
Condition : Two charts on thin ply paper, good impression. Each sheet 415x495mm. if joined 415x990mm. Two small wormholes in upper part. Some remains from old folds, now flattened out.
