Description :FIRST EDITION. "The Large English Atlas" is the most important eighteenth-century English atlas to be published before the appearance of John Cary's new English atlas in 1787. The highly-detailed and large scale folio maps, engraved by Emanuel Bowen and Thomas Kitchen at the instigation of John Hinton, were first collected together and issued by John Tinney, Thomas Bowles and Robert Sayer in 1760.
The Atlas was re-issued in 1762, 1763, 1764, 1767, 1779 & 1887, and in 1794 as The English Atlas.

The maps bear the imprints of John Bowles, Carington Bowles and Sayer (some having a gap where Tinney's name has been removed), with the maps of Buckinghamshire and Worcestershire dated 1756. Includes inset views or plans of major cities, including prospects of Ely, York, Leeds, Cardiff and Chichester.

Includes : a general map of England and Wales (Kitchin), a map of North Britain and Scotland (printed for John Bowles, Carington Bowles and Sayer), Ireland (C. and J. Bowles and Sayer) and 44 county maps by Bowen and Kitchin, printed by or for various publishers between 1749 and 1760 and including : Buckinghamshire (T. and J. Bowles and Sayer, 1756) , Cornwall with inset map of the Isles of Scilly (Kitchin) , Cambridgeshire with inset view 'Prospect of Ely' (Bowen) , Devon with inset plan of Plymouth (J. and C. Bowles and Sayer, n.d.) , Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire (J. and C. Bowles, and Sayer, 1760) , Middlesex flanked by coats of arms (n.d.) , Norfolk (1749, C. and J. Bowles and Sayer) , Sussex with inset views and plans of Chichester and Lewes (T. and J. Bowles and Sayer) , Somerset with inset plan of Bath (C. and J. Bowles and Sayer) , Warwickshire with inset views of Tamworth, Warwick and Kenilworth castles and Guy's Cliff (T. and J. Bowles and Sayer) , Cumberland (1760, T. and J. Bowles and Sayer) , Cardiganshire with inset view of Haverfordwest (T. and J. Bowles and Sayer)), Carmarthanshire with inset views of Carmarthan and Cardiff (T. and J. Bowles and Sayer) , Worcester (C. and J. Bowles and Sayer, 1756) , East Riding with inset view of Hull (T. and J. Bowles and Sayer , North Riding with inset view of York (T. and J. Bowles and Sayer) , West Riding with inset view of Leeds (C. and J. Bowles and Sayer).

Emanuel Bowen was one of the leading mid-century map and print sellers. He was also an accomplished engraver, appointed to George II and to Louis XV of France, and is probably best known for the elegant county maps in his "Large English Atlas" (R. W. Shirley, Printed maps of the British Isles 1650-1750).

The following maps are included in this atlas:

Condition : Large folio. Title printed in red and black (with list of contents) and 47 double-page engraved maps in original outline colours. Oxidation of green colour slightly affecting the maps, specifically the last one. Damp staining to the title-page and a few maps, some maps torn at fold, a few maps creased. Recent cardboards. 580 x 405 mm. Manuscript label on front cover : "Atlas Anglais Contenant toutes les Provinces d'Angleterre".
