Title : Lumen Historiarum per Occidentem. . . / Lumen Historiarum per Oreintem. . . Lumen Historiarum per Occidentem. . . / Lumen Historiarum per Orientem. . ..
Map maker : JANSSONIUS, J..
Date : Amsterdam, 1652.
Size : 15.0 x 18.9 inches. / 38.0 x 48.0 cm.
Colouring : In original o/l colours.

Description :A pair of interesting seventeenth century maps. The first map is an unusual 1652 map of Europe as known to the ancients by Jan Jansson. Centered on Italy, this map covers from Spain to Greece and from England to northern Africa. Designed by Frans van Haren (Haraeus), a Dutch theologian and globe maker.
from a cartographic standpoint, this map draws heavily upon a very similar map of the same name published by A. Ortelius, in his 1597 Parergon. Based on Greek and Roman sources including Pliny, Strabo, Virgil, Caesar, and others. Ships and monsters decorate the seas. A small decorative baroque title cartouche appears in the lower left corner. This map was published in volume six, of the Orbis Antiquus of Jan Jansson's 'Novus Atlas'.

The second map is a beautifully engraved map of the eastern Mediterranean and across to the Persian Gulf, all based on the Ortelius/Vrients map of this title, designed by Franciscus Haraeus.
The map continues through Turkey, and the Caucasus, up to include the region northern reaches of the Black Sea. Curious map details include the pyramids in Egypt, the route of Abraham from Ur to Sichem, and the wandering of the Children of Israel.
A large inset map of the Holy Land is shown to the right. Importantly, this map was compiled by Frans van Heren, and engraved by Petrus Kaerius for Georg Horn's classical atlas.
Condition : Maps are slightly browned, slight foxing, slight map damage where verdigris has eaten through the paper. Small old repair to lower centrefold.
Else in good overall condition.
Each map ca. 380 x 480mm.
