Title : A Chart of New York Island & North River: East River, Passage Through Hell’s Gate, Flushing Bay, Hampstead Bay …… (Fragment Only).
Map maker : DES BARRES, J..
Date : London, 1777.
Size : 12.6 x 23.6 inches. / 32.0 x 60.0 cm.
Colouring : Uncoloured.

Description :This is a fragment of a very important, large chart. It was produced by Joseph Des Barres in London in 1777. The full map shows Long Island north shore from Eaton’s Neck west to Cow Bay. The relief is shown by hachures and the depths shown by soundings. Examples of these charts were frequently carried on board the British war ships operating in American waters during the Revolution. The full New York Island chart sold at Christies Auction House in 2015 for $4,375.
Joseph Frederick Wallet Des Barres (1721 – 1824)) was a cartographer who served in the Seven Years' War, in part, as the aide-de-camp to General James Wolfe. He also created the monumental four-volume “ATLANTIC NEPTUNE”, which was the most important collection of maps, charts and views of North America published in the eighteenth century. Later, he became the Governor of Cape Breton Island and Prince Edward Island. For a period of time, Captain James Cook was his assistant.

THE ATLANTIC NEPTUNE is a monumental four volume atlas which was the most important collection of maps, charts and views of North America published in the eighteenth century. It was created by Colonel Joseph Frederick Wallet Des Barres. He made many maps of the atlas mapping the coast of North America from Newfoundland to New York. His survey of the coast of Nova Scotia took approximately ten years due its length and intricacy. Des Barres was exasperated with the work stating "There is scarcely any known shore so much intersected with Bays, Harbours, and Creeks as this is ... and the Offing of it is so full of Islands, Rocks, and Shoals as are almost innumerable.
In 1774 under direction for the British Admiralty, Des Barres compiled and edited his and many others' charts and maps of eastern North America. The completed work Atlantic Neptune was published in 1777, having cost the Admiralty an estimated £100,000.

Condition : Unfortunately, only a fragment of the full map which was about 46” x 30”. This piece is only 25” x 14”. The rest of the chart was damaged beyond repair. The right side is correct while the top was lowered and the left side and bottom were drawn in facsimile. The scale key is original. Fortunately, this remaining map had about half of the land area (west half missing) while the rest was open sea.
