Orbis Terrae Compendiosa Descriptio Quam ex Magna Universali Gerardi Mercatoris ... Rumoldus Mercator fieri curabat A. M. D. LXXXVII. World in two hemishperes, surrounded by a strapwork border. With an armillary sphere and an elaborate compass rose between the two hemispheres. Compiled by Rumold Mercator after Gerardus Mercator's world map of 1569. (290 x 515 cm.) Reference: Shirley: Mapping of the world, Entry 157.

"Europa, ad magnae Europae Gerardi Mercatoris P. imitationem, Rumoldi Mercatoris F. cum edita, servato tamen initio longitudinis ex ratione magnetis quod Pater in magna sua universali posuit." Map of Europe with a nice and decorative title cartouche. (385 x 470 mm.)

"Africa. Ex magna orbis terrae descriptione Gerardi Mercatoris desumpta. Studio & industria G.M. Inunioris." Map of Africa with a nice and decorative title cartouche. (385 x 470 mm.)
The depiction of the Nile is based on Ptolemy's geography with some complex modifications from various sources, including Abyssinian monks. References: Betz #31; Norwich #21; Van der Krogt (Vol. I) #8600:1A.

"America sive India Nova, ad magnae Gerardi Mercatoris avi Universalis imitationem in compendium redacta. Per Michaelem Mercatorem Duysburgensem." Map of the western hemisphere with North and South America, with 'Terra Australis' and 'Nova Guinea'. With three round inset maps (Haiti, Cuba, and the Gulf of Mexico) and a title cartouche at the corners. Maps are surrounded by ornamental leaves and tendrils.
There is a large inland lake in Canada, and the St Lawrence River extends nearly halfway across the continent with no Great Lakes. There is a still a bulge in the west coast of South America. The large southern continent extends above the Tropic of Capricorn in the Pacific where there is a very large island of New Guinea. (375 x 460 mm.) Reference: P.Burden: Mapping of America, # 87.

"Asia ex magna orbis terrae descriptione Gerardi Mercatoris desumpta, studio et industria G.M. Iunioris." Map of Asia with a nice and decorative title cartouche. The coasts of Northeast Asia and Northwest North America are separated by Gastaldi's fabled Strait of Anian. South of this strait a beautifully engraved galleon gives speculation to the possibility of a northern route to Asia. Sumatra has a curiously archaic outline, while the relationship between New Guinea and Terra Australis is left to the viewer's imagination. References: Yeo #13; Parry #3.13, Van der Krogt (Vol. I) #8000:1A.(380 x 465 mm.)
Condition : size of the world map is 290 x 525 mm. Some folds along central fold of the world map. Old restoration in the lower margin of the world map.
