Title : A View of West-Point on the River Hudson, With the Steam-Boat, invented by M. Fulton, going up from New-York to Albany..
Map maker : BERTHAUX, F..
Date : Dijon, 1818.
Size : 8.4 x 12.6 inches. / 21.3 x 32.0 cm.
Colouring : Uncoloured.

Description :A lithographic incunabula showing a view of West-Point on the River Hudson, with the Steam-Boat, invented by M. Fulton, going up from New-York to Albany. Lithograph after a drawing by Charles Balthazar Julien Fevret de Saint-Mémin, (1770-1852). Signed "S. M." on stone, in image lower left.

Underneath the illustration we find a bi-langual title in English "A View of West-Point on the River Hudson, with the Steam-boat, invented by M. Fulton, going up from New-York to Albany." and in French "Vue de West-Point sur la Riviére l’Hudson, et du Bateau-à-vapeur, invente par M. Fulton, rementant de New-York à Albany."

Fevrét de Saint-Mémin was in New York in 1793 where he did several hundred medallion portraits, as well as notable views. In 1814 he returned to Dijon where this lithograph was published.
Stokes knew of only 5 copies, of which only 2 were from the completed stone.
An example WITHOUT title is also offered in this auction; see lot 36863

The view can be dated between 1808 when the steamboat was lengthened and 1814 when it went out of service. Stokes calls it the only known contemporary view of the ship.
