Title : Kaart der Reyse van Abel Tasman volgens syn eygen opstel...
Map maker : VALENTIJN, F..
Date : Amsterdam, 1726.
Size : 11.9 x 18.3 inches. / 30.2 x 46.5 cm.
Colouring : Uncoloured.

Description :Rare and important map from Vol III, 2 of Valentynís Oud en Nieuw Oost Indien [1726] detailing the discoveries of Abel Tasman in Australasia during the course of his two voyages of 1642 & 1644.
The map includes the track of Tasmanís first Voyage 1642-43 from Mauritius. Whilst the track of his second voyage in 1644 is not included, the discoveries made along the northern coasts of Australia are shown. Tasmanís first voyage was the first to circumnavigate, albeit incompletely, the whole of the Australasia region and to give it recognizable geographical limits for the first time, proving that it was not part of the great Southland.
In the course of this first voyage Tasman surveyed the coasts of Tasmania and New Zealand and reconnoitering the Tonga and Fiji island archipelagos in the Pacific. His second voyage proved less successful in its intended aim of finding a passage south of New Guinea to the east coast of Australia, but did result in much of the latterís hitherto- unknown northern coastlines being charted.
FranÁois Valentijn (1666-1727), a missionary, worked at Amboina from 1684 to 1694 and 1705 to 1713 and traveled extensively in the V.O.C.'s lands. He is best known for his monumental history and description, ''Oud en Nieuw Oost-IndiŽn'' which remains one of the most important primary sources for the East Indies and neighboring lands.
