Map maker : D'ANVILLE, J..
Date : Paris, 1751.
Size : 29.5 x 31.3 inches. / 75.0 x 79.5 cm.

Description :Magnificent 2-sheet map of the western half of Asia by D’Anville. Includes from Turkey through the Black and Caspian Seas to Tibet, and south to include the Arabian peninsula and all of India.
Fine detail throughout. It offers excellent coverage of the central Asian portions of the 'Silk Route', naming the centres of Samarkand, Bukhara, Lop Nor, and others.

Features a very large title cartouche that takes up the entire Arabian Sea, and incorporates four Asian figures including stylized Christian, Muslim Zoroastrian, and Buddhist elements. It was engraved for D'Anville by Guillaume Delahaye.

Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697–1782), was both a geographer and cartographer, who greatly improved the standards of map-making. His maps of ancient geography, characterized by careful, accurate work and based largely on original research, are especially valuable.

Guillaume Delahaye (1725-1802) was a member of the family of engravers active in Paris throughout the 18th century. Delahaye engraved for many of the great cartographers of 18th century Paris, including D'Anville and Vaugondy.
Condition : In very good condition on hand-made, chain linked, water-marked paper. Issued on two folding sheets, this very large map has now been flattened out and joined.
