Title : Saltzburgensis episcopatus..
Map maker : DE JODE, G..
Date : Antwerp, 1593.
Size : 13.9 x 8.9 inches. / 35.2 x 22.7 cm.
Colouring : Uncoloured.

Description :Scarce map of the diocese Salzburg embraces the area between Braunau and Klagenfurt in Austria. The coat of arms belongs to Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, the bischof of Salzburg between 1587 and 1612.
The map is based on the oldest map of the Salzburg Land, made by Marx (Marcus) Setznagel (ca 1525-1580) Daß Landt und Erzstifft Saltzburg mit den anstossenden Coherentzen, and published in 1554 by Hans Baumann. It was probably ordered by Ernest, Duke of Bavaria (1500-1560), who was the administrator of the diocese os Salzburg between 1550-1554. No copy of the original wood-cut wall map survives.

From the first edition of De Jode's Speculum Orbis Terrarum, the second general atlas of the world, after Ortelius. The first edition of De Jode's atlas was not a commercial success, making maps from their first edition very rare.
Gerard De Jode was the great rival of Ortelius, both made a living out of selling maps, and it seems not always on good terms. It is probable that Ortelius was responsible for a delay in the publication of Gerard de Jode's Speculum. Gerard De Jode, 18 years older than Ortelius, owned many more copper-plates for maps than Ortelius had. Ortelius did not employ highly paid engravers as De Jode had done.
De Jode received the ecclesiastical imprimatur in 1573, but it was not until 1579 that the first copies of the Speculum were sold at Plantin's shop, and only very few copies were sold. Now-a-days only a few atlases from the first and only edition are known to exist. Also single leaves are an utmost rarity.
After the death of Gerard in 1591, the business was carried on by his widow and his son Cornelis, who re-issued the Speculum in 1593, most plates were newly engraved, and therefore making those of the first edition extremely rare.
Condition : Dark impression. Cut into right hand plate mark, with some loss and added margin. Blank margin.
