Size : 18.0 x 68.9 inches. / 45.8 x 175.0 cm.
Colouring : Uncoloured.

Description :This large-scale map of Java is richly engraved with details of agricultural fields, roads, temples, and topography. The coastline is filled with soundings, anchorages, shoals and other navigational hazards. Batavia, which was the center of the Dutch trading empire in the East Indies, is depicted with a miniature bird's-eye plan.

The map originally appeared in Valentijn's book Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien (Dordrecht/Amsterdam 1724/26). With in the right bottom corner the imprint J.van Braam en G. onder de Linden.
Including the area east of Cape of Good Hope till Australia and Japan.

François Valentijn (1666-1727), a missionary, worked at Amboina from 1684 to 1694 and 1705 to 1713 and traveled extensively in the V.O.C.'s lands. He is best known for his monumental history and description, ''Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën'' which remains one of the most important primary sources for the East Indies and neighboring lands.

Condition : Folds as issued. In very good to mint condition. Consists of seven separate printed sheets that when joined, form the longest map of Java, at 1.75m, ever printed.
