Title : Tabula Exactissima Regnorum Sueciae et Norvegiae, nec non Maris Universi Orientalis Terrarumq. adjacentium . . . A Nicolao Iohannide Piscatore..
Map maker : VISSCHER, N.J. (Piscatore).
Date : Willem Blaeu, Amsterdam, 1634.
Size : 17.9 x 21.9 inches. / 45.5 x 55.5 cm.
Colouring : Uncoloured.

Description :Very fine and uncommon map of Scandinavia, and including the costal provinces of the Netherlands, Germany and Poland, Lithuania and Russia. After Andreas Buraeus, the father of Swedish cartography , whose map was compiled from original survey work.
Decorated with a large, spectacular title cartouche with numerous coats of arms, and dedicated to Gustavo Adolpho, M.D., a wind rose and sailing ships in the North Sea.

Very rare state : Originally engraved by Abraham Goos (1630) for Jodocus Hondius II and included in very few Henricus Hondius atlases up to 1633. Than Blaeu must have aquired the copper plate and used it in his 1634 atlas, but was already replaced in 1635 by "Suecia, Dania et Norvegia, Regna Europae Septentrionalia. Iuxta Archetypum Andreae Buraei. . ."
The copper plate must have been sold to Visscher who reworked the plate by deleting the hatchures aroundthe coast lines and placing a decoration around the engravers name which now hides the original date of 1630. The plate was afterwards used for almost 80 years.

From an incomplete example of the 1634 German text edition of Blaeu's "Novus Atlas", previously owned by Johann Christoph Gesen (1639), Johann Rudolph von Metzradt (1651), Friedrich August II, King of Saxony (1797-1854).
P. van der Krogt mentions two variants for the German 1634 text edition and only two examples containing proof states (Bad Münstereifel and Gotha).

Condition : Slightly age-toned, and with a tiny pin hole to engraved area, but a blank space, repair to a small teat to base of centerfold 2 cm in length. A good and dark impression. Fine condition. German text to verso.
