Description :One of the rarest maps covering a large part of the Netherlands, engraved by Benjamin Wright and published by Cornelis Claesz. Schilder mentions only one other know copy !
West-south-west oriented map of the Rhine River bounded to the southeast by the line Groningen – Frankfurt. In the southwest, the boundary is formed by the line Antwerp – Namur – Luxembourg. Cornelis Claesz based his map on the Rhine River map by Theodor de Bry (1594) who was on its turn based on a map by Casper Vopelius (1511-1561).
To the right two text panels, including “nec non pontium, aggerum, et propugnaculorum his bellis nuper extructorum”, Conelis Claesz was apparently responding to the demand for a general map of the Rhine and Maas area. In those years, this area was repeatedly a theater of war in the conflict between Prince Maurits and the Spanish commander Spinola.

The main accent is on the representation of the river systems the forests and mountains are schematically drawn. To some extent the many settlements are indicated by idealized profiles. The depiction of sailing ships and barges supports the fact of the Rhine being an important shipping route. The strategic importance of bridges is given the necessary attention on the map.
Condition : On two joined sheets. A nice and dark printing. A light stain on the right part of the engraving. Two vertical folds repaired.
