Title : A chart of the Western Part of the East-Indies with all the Adjacent Islands from Cape Bona Esperanca to the Island od Zelone..
Map maker : SELLER, J..
Date : London, Mount & Page, ca. 1720.
Size : 17.9 x 22.6 inches. / 45.5 x 57.5 cm.
Colouring : Coloured.

Description :This scarce sea chart of the Indian Ocean from the Cape of Good Hope to the west coast of India (Malabar). First issued by John Seller, the present example published by Mount and Page and no longer includes Samuel Thornton's name in the cartouche.

In 1671, London mapmaker John Seller (1630 - 1697) commenced work on English Pilot, a publication which he hoped would challenge the Dutch dominance of the market for sea charts and atlases. Seller envisioned a work in four books, covering different regions of the globe. Part I, describing northern navigation and published in 1671, was followed the next year by Part II covering southern navigation. In 1675 Part III, also known as Oriental Navigation, was printed though incomplete.
Seller lacked the necessary capital to complete the mammoth undertaking, and in 1679 sold his rights to John Thornton (1641-1708), the official hydrographer to the English East India Company. ¤

Condition : Margins cut close, with paper thinness, a repaired hole in right hand part and repaired tears. Paper backed with thin Japan paper for protective reason. Trimmed to lower neat line.
