Map maker : OTTENS, R. / J. / PANSER, S..
Date : Amsterdam , 1733.
Size : 18.5 x 29.1 inches. / 47.0 x 74.0 cm.
Colouring : Original colours

Description :Rare broadside sheet with engraved double-hemisphere worldmap, depicting the 1733 solar eclipse, which on 13 May would wrap up in shadows the northern parts of the earth, i.a. the whole of western Europe and to the south Morocco and Algeria.

The total eclipse would follow an arctic course north of America, crossing Groenland, then running below Iceland, over Scandinavia and ending in Russia just east of Finland.
The figures below the worldmap are two depictions of how the eclipse would show in Amsterdam in different phases, accompanied by, in the right letterpress column, a mathematical explanation (the lacking left column covering the details of the eclipse's course elsewhere in the world).

The noteworthy ("merkwaardige") aspect of this eclipse was that, according to Panser's calculations, the eclipse's ending and the setting of the sun would occur simultaneously, at 7:43 PM. Just to check, Panser asks "alle Liefhebbers die tyd en gelegentheid hebben, om deeze merkwaardige Zonsverduistering waar te neemen, om dezelve eens tegen deeze myne Reekening te houden".
Despite the up-to-date astronomical information, the eclipse is indicated on a quite obsolete worldmap: the one by Arnold Colom of ±1655 (Shirley 395, the hemispheres only). A fine celestial item.
¤

Condition : Probably original grey colours in northern hemisphere.
Some discolouration of paper, old folds with pinholes on crossings. A few light mainly marginal spotting.
Left margin cut within printed area. Lacks the letterpress "Generale Aanwyzing" at left, and lower left corner (15x8cm.) of central engraved part missing. Some old backing on verso.
