Title : Haemisphaerium Stellatum Australe Cum Aequali Sphaerarum Proportione..
Map maker : CELLARIUS, A..
Date : Amsterdam, J.Janssonius, 1661.
Size : 16.8 x 19.9 inches. / 42.7 x 50.6 cm.
Colouring : In attractive colours.

Description :The very rare first edition, first state of this spectacular celestial chart showing the constellation of the southern hemisphere superimposed upon a globe depicting America with California as an island with a rounded coastline, and with many place names: P. San Francisco Draco, Pd.Carinda, S.Martin, S.Clement, I.de Paxaros, I.de Seintas and C.S.Lucas.
The first state is extremely rare, and has no plate number in the lower right corner. Later editions are subsequently printed in 1661, 1666 and in 1708 by Schenk and Valk.

The intent of the design was to display the constellations that would be visible from the areas of the earth illustrated on the map.
The decorative border includes two title cartouches supported by trumpeting angels. In the lower corners scenes from classical mythology with the figures of Atlas and Hercules supporting the globe.
This particular first edition has no page numbering in the lower right corner. Very rare.

Andreas Cellarius (active from 1656-1702), Dutch mathematician and geographer, rector of the Latin School at Hoorn. He may have been of German or Polish origin, with the name of Keller or Kellner. Cellarius adopted the system of Julius Schiller who renamed all constellations known at that time and sketched them again in order to fit the sky into a system of Christian symbolism.
In Cellarius' Atlas Coelestis Schiller's system has been elaborated further. In fact, Schiller became more widely known by Cellarius' atlas than by his own work.
From: Atlas Coelestis seu Harmonia Macrocosmica.
Peter Schenk and Gerard Valk reissued the copperplates of the original Cellarius atlas in 1708. These plates, identified by the addition of the new publisher's imprint on the title banner.
