Title : Recueil des plans de l'Amerique Septentrionale..
Map maker : LE ROUGE, G.L..
Date : Paris, 1755.
Size : 9.1 x 7.5 inches. / 23.0 x 19.0 cm.
Colouring : Uncoloured.

Description : An interesting and rare composite atlas published at the outset of the French and Indian War, likely hurried into print by le Rouge to meet demand for information about events in North America.
The images primarily depict towns and forts in Canada and the Caribbean. Most are derived from sources such as Popple, Bellin and other publications by Rouge. Some, however, such as plans of Forts Halifax, Western and Francfort in Maine’s Kennebeck region, may be have been derived from more exotic models such as engravings by Thomas Johnston in Boston.
The plates are folding and measure about 170 x 250mm. The single page plates measure ca. 170 x 120mm.

Rouge’s atlas is well represented in institutional collections but is rare on the market. It should not be confused with his much-more-readily-available Recueil des Fortifications Forts et Ports de Mer de France (1755 and later). That work consists of 89 sheets of plans of French forts and outposts, only three of which have North American content (These three also appear in the Recueil des Plans.)

The contents of the atlas are as follows:
1. Engraved title
2. Plan de la Ville de QUEBEC
3. VUE DE QUEBEC, Capitale du Canada
4. en AMERIQUE Quebec [and] Louisbourg
5. Cayenne [with] Ville Marie
6. Nouvelle Orleans [with] Fort Dauphin
9. CHARLES-TOWN Capitale de la Caroline
10. PORT-ROYAL De Jamaique
11. KINGSTON Capitale de la Jamaique
13. PORT ROYAL Appelle aujourd’ par les Anglois ANNAPOLIS ROYAL
14. ST. DOMINGO, Capitale de l`isle du meme nom
15. VERA CRUZ Dans le Golfe du Mexique
17. SAULT DU NIAGARA De 135 pieds de haut

The bibliographic sources list varying collations for this work, with some examples having as many as 19 plates with additional images of Boston and/or Port Royal in Nova Scotia. It must be emphasized that the copy of the atlas offered here exhibits no signs of any plates having been removed and there appears to be complete as issued.

Further confusing matters, some copies of the Recueil bear the 1755 title page but include later maps and views illustrating events of the Revolutionary War. Here again, the exact contents seem to vary, and it is not clear whether these were made to order by Rouge or “extra illustrated” by owners seeking to keep up with events.

References : Howes #L267 (calling for 19 “maps” and two “plates”). Phillips, Atlases, #1185 (listing 18 plates, including all the ones in our copy plus a plan of Boston). Sabin #68450 (calling for title plus 16 plates). OCLC #1010257, 41014082 et al., giving numerous institutional holdings with varying collations.
American Book Prices Current lists a single, imperfect example sold at auction in 2000. One copy (without Niagara plate) sold by a dealer. Not in Americana Exchange, Antique Map Price Record, Rumsey or Streeter.

Condition : 8vo. Engraved title plus 16 engraved plates bearing a total of 21 maps and plans (3 folding) and 2 folding views. Wraps of early marbled paper, wove endpapers, probably late 19th-early 20th century. Very good. Moderate marginal soiling to. Wraps bumped and chipped but holding. Size of book block 230 x 190mm.
