Description :Map of the Russian Empire, engraved by Dirck Gryp for Speed's 'Prospect of the… World'
Carte-a-figure map of Asia from Moscow in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east. Shows Korea as an island and also a part of Alaska. America is separated from Asia by the Strait of Anian. Along the top of the map are views of Astracan, Samarchand, Cambalu and 'The house of Nova Zemla' whilst along the left and right borders are 8 representations of local inhabitants. Cambalu was the name used by Marco Polo for the city of Beijing (Peking) which is incorrectly shown on the northern side of the Great Wall.
Just above the Great Wall is text which reads "In this Country is a hil out of which they dig earth called by Pliny terra Asbestus, having fine veines like grasse which being spun and weaved yeeld cloth that wil nut burn in the fire". . Included in the four views at top is a view of Nova Zembla, the winter quarters of Barents who searched for a northern passage between Russia and America. The other views depict important cities of the Silk Route - Astrakan, Samarkand and Cambalu. In the side panels are figures of the people of Tartary in their native costume. The English text on verso provides a fascinating contemporary description of the region.
Imprint of Bassett and Chiswell in title cartouche with a blank dedication cartouche. Beautifully coloured. English text on verso.

Condition : Beautifully coloured. In very good condition both top corners at the margins are nicked and slight loss of margin to the right hand margin.
