Description :Four very desirable and early town-plans Braunschweig, Luneburg, Bremen and Stade.
"BRAUNSCHWEIG : he very low viewpoint allows the tops of the towers, churches and houses to be seen. Most striking of these is the church of St Andreas on the left with its two towers. Close to the center lies the cathedral (De Dom), begun by the Guelph Henry the Lion beside his Dankwarderode castle in 1173 and consecrated in 1226.. ." (Taschen, Braun and Hogenberg, p.81.)

LÜNEBURG : Lüneburg, a well-known city in Saxony, highly famed for its salt mines.

BREMEN : This view is made after a woodcut by Martin Weigel, c. 1550.

STADE : Contrary to the title of the plate - Aldenburgum Hosatiae - the view in fact shows the town of Stade in Lower Saxony, as can be clearly deduced from he captions identifying the buildings and churches and from a comparison with the full-page illustration of Stade. (Taschen, Braun and Hogenberg, p.81.)

From volume one of the greatest publication in this genre!. The Civitates was compiled and written by George Braun, Canon of Cologne Cathedral. Braun gathered together vast amounts of information and draft plans to produce over 500 city views/maps published in six parts between 1572 and 1617. Most of these engravings were made by Simon Novellanus and Frans Hogenberg, many after drawings by Joris Hoefnagel.

Condition : Latin text on verso. Some marginal tumbling and some very light toning in center fold and some offsetting due to oxidation. Old repair of split lower part center fold, 5cm. into engraved area. In very attractive original colouring.
