Title : Quomodo Hollandi in Mavritii Insula Ingentes. (Dutch hunting parrots on Mauritius in 1598).
Map maker : DE BRY, Th..
Date : Frankfurt, 1609.
Size : 5.4 x 7.0 inches. / 13.7 x 17.7 cm.
Colouring : Uncoloured.

Description :A picture of giant tortoises in Mauritius. In the background Dutch hunting parrots. The Dutch abandoned Mauritius after two unsuccessful attempts to colonize the island. By the time they left two endemic species to Mauritius, the Dodo bird, (which they called Walgvogel), and the giant tortoises, (cylindraspis inepta and cylindraspis trisserata), were already extinct due to extensive hunting. The giant tortoises could easily carry 2 persons sitting on their shell. Some bones of the tortoises and of the Dodo which were found at Mare aux Songes are displayed here and at the Mauritius Natural History Museum, in Port Louis. These bones bear testimony to their existence till some few hundred years back.

Theodore de Bry, a German engraver and book dealer, began a compilation of early voyages in 1590 and had published six parts at the time of his death in 1598. His widow, two sons, and another family member continued the work, which comprised a total of fifty-four parts when it was completed in 1630. The publication is in two series, denoted the Grands Voyages and the Petit Voyages. A German edition of the Petit Voyages was published in 1599 in Frankfurt am Main. A second German edition came out in 1616. Latin editions were published in 1609 and 1629.
