Description :A matching set of all six title pages, together with their introduction pages from the celebrated "Civitates Orbis Terrarum". The first comprehensive and systematically designed atlas with town views and plans from all over the world.
Frans Hogenberg (1535 Mechelen - Cologne 1590) was a copper engraver and etcher. Georg Braun (1541 - Cologne - 1622) was a geographer and publisher. The collection 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum' was published from 1572 until 1618 and ultimately 6 volumes contained more than 500 copper engravings together with a huge amount of textural information.

- (Volume 1) Civitates Orbis Terrarum. + 39pp. text. (Features classical Greek creation myths, figures include Great Mother Goddess (caption: Ornament of the World), Athena (Founder of Forts) and Man (Founder of Cities). This impression with "Liber Primus" at the base of the design.)

- (Volume 2) De Praecipuis, Totius Universi Urbibus, Liber Secundus. + 25 pp. text. (At the top are figures representing Religion and Politics, placed on either side of Cybele, who is seated on a chariot drawn by lions. At the bottom of the stone entablature are the household gods Penates and Lares.)

- (Volume 3) Urbium Praecipuarum Totius Mundi. + 8 pp. text. (depicts virtues such as Peace, Plenty, Justice, Concord, Security, Community and Obedience with their attributes. In the background is a construction scene with masons and others at work on a Tower of Babel-type building.)

- (Volume 4) Urbium praecipuarum mundi theatrum quintum. +4 pp. text. (With seven female figures from Roman mythology are gathered. Each of the figures is named: Constantia (Steadfast), Honor (Honor and Valor), Dignitas (Virtue), Pax (Peace), Iustitia (Justice), Diligenti (Diligence), and Sapientia (Wisdom.)

- (Volume 5) Urbium praecipuarum Mundi Theatrum Quintum. + 24pp. text. (With Renaissance architectural elements and many figures, including the personifications of Europe, Asia, Amerca and Africa in the middle and Justitia and Minerva on the top of the structure. )

- (Volume 6) Theatri Praecipuarum Totius Mundi Urbium Liber Sextus. + 6 pp. text. (With personifications, portraits and war scenes.)


Condition : A good and dark impression. Six engraved title pages, complete with their poems, index, dedication leaves for each volume.
