Title : Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica . . ..
Map maker : KAERIUS, P..
Date : Amsterdam, 1637.
Size : 15.9 x 21.3 inches. / 40.5 x 54.0 cm.
Colouring : Coloured.

Description :This is Petrus Kaerius' scarce version of Blaeu's carte-a-figures map of the world. The border depicting allegorical representations of the sun, moon, and the five known planets, the four elements and the four seasons.
The map was first published and dated 1608. In 1621 Kaerius sold his plates to Jan Janssonius who then issued the map with his imprint. This example is the fourth state with Janssonius' imprint and no date. Dutch text on verso.
The map itself has on it more legends than that of Blaeu, the principal additions referring to explorations in the Arctic. A long note near the cartouche headed 'America' queries whether the straits of Anian and Davis do in fact link up to form a north-west passage. With the imprint of J.Janssonius and the date erased.
Along the bottom are vignettes showing the seven wonders of the world: the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Colossus over the harbour at Rhodes, the Pyramids, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus at Cairo, the Temple of Diana, the Statue of Jupiter and the lighthouse at Alexandria. Petrus Plancius' world map of 1592 was the main source of geographical information for the map. The map itself is richly decorated with cartouches, sea battles, monsters and compass roses.
Shirley, world 264, 4th state.
Condition : Repair of split lower part center fold. Paper has been slightly washed. Backed with Japanese paper for protective reason. Good condition.
