Date : Duisburg and then Amsterdam, (1606) 1613.
Size : 13.0 x 18.5 inches. / 33.0 x 47.0 cm.

Description :This is a fine, early map of the Ile de France and the area surrounding Paris. The map has considerable details of the towns and villages in the region. The title cartouche with an acknowledgement at its bottom to the mapmaker "F. Guilloterio Biturigi.".
This map was engraved by Jodocus Hondius for his first edition of Gerard Mercator's atlas, Gerardi Mercatoris Atlas sive Cosmographicae. It went through editions to 1630. The map was re-engraved by Janssonius and others for later editions of the atlas to c.1680.
Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612) was the founder of the famous 17th century Dutch map publishing family. Hondius, along with sons Jodocus II and Henricus and son-in-law Johannes Janssonius, was prominent in Dutch cartography and his family competed aggressively with the emerging Blaeu family map business.
This particular map is from a Latin edition of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas Sive Cosmographicae with a signature of "Rrr" and pages 151-152, indicating a date of 1613 for this map (v.d. Krogt, p 640).
Reference: Krogt, Peter van der, Koeman's Atlantes Neerlandici, vol. 1. 't Goy-Houten: HES Publishers,1997
Condition : Very Good Condition. The map impression is strong and attractively colored. Complete, untrimmed margins with binder's stub remaining on the verso.
With age-toning in the margins as was common on many early Mercator-Hondius maps.
