Description :One of the most famous and decorative maps of America. In 1587, a new plate was engraved which appeared in editions from 1588 onwards. Of the three maps, this one is perhaps the most important. It is the most geographically advanced one, with the bulge in Chile removed, the Salomon Islands inserted and additional names, including C.Mendocino, added to the north west coast. Furthermore, this is the only one of the three plates which is signed by Ortelius as responsible for the preparation of the map. From the Spanish edition of 1588. The map has Spanish text on the verso with the title El Orbe Nuevo.

The Spanish edition is the initiative of Christoffel Plantijn himself. After a short stay in Calvinistic Leiden it was necessary for him to prove his loyalty to the Spanish King, so he decided to publish a spanish translation of the Theatrum, dedicated to the future King Philip III. The Franciscan monk Balthasar Vincentius translated the text on the verso into Spanish.
This map is from the first Spanish text edition of 1588, others would follow in 1602, 1609, 1612, 1641.
It is estimates that the atlas was printed in 255 examples. (Imhof 1998, 46-47)

With the highest level of 16th-century Dutch hand-colouring.
