Title : Petr Welikij imperator i camoderschez wserossinskij oschez oschetscheschewa (rossice). Petrus Magnus totius Russiae imperator et autocrator..
Map maker : ZOUBOFF, A. / TANNAUER, J.G..
Date : St. Petersburg, c. 1740.
Size : 12.7 x 9.3 inches. / 32.3 x 23.5 cm.
Colouring : In original o/l colours.

Description :Mezzo tint by A. Zouboff, after J. G. Tannauer. Very rare variant of the portrait of Peter the Great with a Cristal Czar cross and crown. Another version is known where the crown is showing diamonds.
The mezzotint was made after a painting by the St. Petersburg court painter Johann Gottfried Tannauers (?-1737).
Provence : Prince Narischkin (with little stamp in lower left corner, not in Lugt). One of the members of this noble family was the mother of Czar Peter the Great, Natalja Kirillowna Naryschkina (1651-1694).
Mezzotint was the first tonal method to be used, enabling half-tones to be produced without using line- or dot-based techniques like hatching, cross-hatching or stipple. Mezzotint achieves tonality by roughening the plate with thousands of little dots made by a metal tool with small teeth, called a "rocker." In printing, the tiny pits in the plate hold the ink when the face of the plate is wiped clean. A high level of quality and richness in the print can be achieved.
The process was especially widely used in England from the mid-eighteenth century, to reproduce portraits and other paintings.
Mezzotints produced in Russia are very rare.
Wassiltschikoff II, 112, 79.
Condition : Mezzotint. Marginal tears and some margins are missing, sometimes running into engraved area. Good impression.
