Title : Carte du Mexique et de la Floride des Terres Angloises et des Isles Antilles du Cours et des Environs de la Riviere de Mississipi ... Par Guillaume Del'Isle Geographe de l'Academie Royale des Scieces..
Map maker : DE L\\\'ISLE, G..
Date : Paris, 1703 / 1708-1718.
Size : 18.7 x 25.5 inches. / 47.5 x 64.8 cm.
Colouring : Original o/l colour.

Description :Rare first edition, second state of the first printed map to accurately depict the course and mouth of the Mississippi River. De L'Isle's Carte du Mexique is drawn from the reports brought back to France from the survivor's of the La Salle expedition into the interior of North America and from information derived from the explorations of Bienville and d'Iberville.
Delisle's important map showing the south-eastern part of the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. With the imprint: A Paris Chez l'Auteur sur le Quai de l Horlage Privilege du Roy por 20. ans. 1703.
According to Tooley, the imprint cited was used starting in 1708. In 1718 Delisle became Geographe du Roi. The title above does not grant him that role. Thus, we can date this particular issue of the map to the period 1708-1718. French towns are represented by church crosses (New Orleans is not shown), Indian villages by tents, and forts by squares.

It is credited with accurately showing the course of the Mississippi River and its mouth for the first time.
Florida extends past the Mississippi River, locates the British Colonies, and the Southwest is New Mexico.
Tooley #50 on p 22 and pl. 12. Cumming p 137 and pl. 43. Wheat Vol I, 58. Wagner map 474. Schwartz & Ehrenberg pl. 82.
Condition : Slight marginal age-toned as usual. Good impression. Very good condition.
