This item was published in Amsterdam, 1697 size is 24.8. x .20.5 inches. (or 63.0. x .52.0 cm.) Left margin cut very short, horizontal fold strengthened on verso, some marginal chipping on top and bottom repaired. A few stains, but in all still a good copy of a scarce map.
Rare sea chart map of ?Muskovien?: comprising northern parts of Norway, Finland and Russia, with insets of Kola peninsula and the course of the Archangel (Dwina) rivers. According to the text in the title cartouche : . . . in ?t groot, geteekend door S. vande Moolen. . . Drawn by S. vande Moolen.
Interestingly the chart has some "pin-points" and and a noter in brown ink north of the town of Archangel, O 7,5. The chart was likely used on board of a ship navigating the Baltic waters.
Johannes Loots published manuals on navigation and sea charts. This map may come from his atlas ?Het Nieu en Compleet Paskaart Boek van de Noord en Oost See? which contained only 11 maps and was published in 1697.
Charts by Johannes Loots (1665-1726 are rare. Loots was a maker of mathematical and nautical instruments. During 1698-1707, various quantities of maps have been sold as atlases but a complete work never appeared. ¤
